Functions and Responsibilities

This department have four main function and responsibilities:-

1. To implement collection of the country revenue by levying toxes on certain imported goods.

    • The main revenue of Customs is from the Customs import duty. Goods tariff duty are base on the Customs Import Duties Order 1973, which came into force on 15th January 1973 together with Customs Act Section 36 and Excise Act Section 37 (Amendment) 1984. In these order, the export duty have been revoked.

2. To enforced customs legislation and regulations.

    • Customs Officers at, Customs check point, periodically makes "random check" inspection to every passenger, vehicle and goods which are comes in and out from this country. If there is any suspicion 100% inspection will be carried out.
    • Some arrests have been made as a result of investigation and observation by the officers from time to time.

    • The Public also play an important role in giving the information to this department in order to detect any activities against Customs legislation and regulation.

    • The department have attended some training, seminar and meeting to cooperate with other Customs Administrations of ASEAN, APEC and WCO in exchanging the information related to enfoce customs legislation and regulations.

    3. As a coordinating agency to other department in controlling the prohibited and restricted goods.

    • To assist various government departments in controlling the prohibited and restricted goods for the benefits and sovereignity of the country.

    • Approval of licence or permit must be obtained before Approval Permit is issued to bring in and out controlled and restricted goods.

4. To facilitate the industries in order to encourage the flow of business activities and develop the country economy.

  • Facilities for the Exemption of Import Customs Duty for equipment, tools/machineries or special parts itself specific for industry under section 15(B), 18(B), 47(A),56(A) and 57(B) First Schedule Customs Import Duties Order 1973.

  • Facilitate the temporary import for specimen of goods, exhibition and demonstration.

  • Give services and facilitation for importing goods via this country to neighbouring countries.
